Painters in Poppies

We fondly call ourselves Artist Sistahs. “Pack up your paints, girls,” Laine beckoned. “We’ll social distance our easels and paint in my backyard.” Several artist friends heeded her call, eager for company and fresh air. I joined Linda, Sandy S, Sandy F, Debbie, Diana and Laine in the spacious and lovely spring setting. We chose our spots: a French-style table with chairs, a studio shed nestled against flowering bushes, a haphazardly-leaning bike, a bluebird house, a still life table arrangement, and a statue of Saint Francis of Assisi were waiting attractions. After lunch in spaced-out patio chairs, we donned our sunhats, aprons and gloves, and lost ourselves in our shared passion. Two hours passed in a timeless moment when we reconvened on the patio for a water break and chatter time. We talked about our paintings progress, much needed haircuts, and the challenge of masked grocery shopping in the "brave new world" of the pandemic.

We have continued our gatherings, rainy weeks the exception, in other backyards around west Burlington and on campus at Elon University. One week we were invited to paint a breathtaking bed of poppies that rivaled any we had seen in either Tuscany or Provence. We've added another name for us, Painters in Poppies or PIPs.  Meade joins the group on occasion and Helen is always with us in spirit.

When I reflect upon these artist friends who have found a way to come together in troubling times, I am touched by our common bonds. Beyond our passion for art, we enjoy travel, treasure family, and laugh often together. We’ve also shared deep losses-a son, a mother, a husband, a grandchild, a son-in-law, a beloved friend- and we have lifted each other through our tears. We appreciate the beauty of God’s paintbrush in nature and seek to capture its image. We count blessings each moment and celebrate joy each day.

Artist Sistahs are very special friends and I am thankful for them. My heart is filled with color.
