Enduring Friendship
Enduring Friendship

Each Monday morning by 9:00 am, Janice sends out a group text to the Monday Night Girls, asking who can join us for our weekly gathering at a local eatery. “Respond by noon and I’ll make a reservation.” Thirteen lady friends, many who have lost spouses, have been sharing dinner on Monday night for several years. We take joy in celebrating birthdays with cards, small gifts and always a photo posted on Facebook. Last week we celebrated Janice’s special year at my home, nine of us in attendance. Donning masks upon entry and social distancing inside, we enjoyed wine and the signature dishes each had prepared. Nina blessed our food and each of us. We felt relaxed and happy to be together, however cautiously.

Perhaps, the highlight of the evening was sitting (spaced) on the patio. The koi pond babbled, birds danced among the feeders, daisies and roses showed their charm, and my cat Charlie languished in the fading sun. The Limelight hydrangeas in the height of bloom, however, stole the show. A feast for our eyes and the perfect backdrop for our group photo!

During this time of uncertainly, small "friend bubbles" are precious. Finding ways to celebrate special events in our lives is important to personal well-being. More than ever, we are reminded of the value of family and friends, and indeed, life itself. I decided to paint the Limelight hydrangeas in celebration of the Monday Night Girls and enduring relationship. Full palette knife!

Happy birthday, Janice! The seventies rock!

How is your heart? Gratitude fills mine.
